strategies for hot dry weather

Here in adelaide summer is in full swing and I'm having trouble
getting seeds started. The T is above 30 every day now and the
humidity very low, 32% yesterday, so anything hardy enough to
stick its head above soil wilts (that's if the ants haven't carried off
the seeds before hand).

Any suggestions on how to cope with this?
