Try starting the seeds indoors, and then transplanting them after they've
grown too big for the ants to carry off. After you've transplanted them,
make sure you give them lots of water. The square foot method should
minimize the amount of water you'll need. I've grown lettuce through the
summer this way.

One nice thing about starting seeds during the summer is that you don't need
to keep them indoors. They can get as much sunlight as they need.
