Thanks to all the people who replied with ideas for coping with the hot
dry weather. I'll probably end up trying them all! One of my problems
is that I've planted, say, a square of carrots and only half survived
so I'm filling in the gaps and can't spread a squar foot of burlap. Mel
would growl at me! But next time I have a clear square foot to plant I will.
Soda bottle over the seeds might help against the ants too.
Mel says don't plant one for the mouse, one for the blackbird, one for
the rabbit, one for the house but for me its one for the caterpillar, one for
the slug, one for the ant, one for the heat and one for the house. Never
mind! I can eat the yummy ones that survive, complete with holes, without
even bothering to wash (if I don't mind the grit!).
My garden is in an old sandpit and is 5' by 7'. I've got trellis around
two sides with tomatoes, butternut punkin (winter squash), watermelon and cucumber.
The vertical growing has turned out to be a fabulous feature of the garden.
It turns out to be a good size for me; very little work but a steady supply of something interesting.
The highlights have been the tomatoes which are 8' tall and have run out of trellis and the
silverbeet (swiss chard) which just keeps on producing. And there are two melons on the
watermelon vines which is a first 'cause I've never grown watermelon before!
