Thought I'd add my winter garden report after Bill DeWitt was kind enough to
share his. I harvested 20 heads of Packman broccoli--many were 18 inches
wide--and froze most. We are now eating all the side shoots (there are
hundreds) raw in salads. My two Carnival tomato plants that went in the
ground on Labor Day have come through the couple of mild freezes and are now
ripening. I've picked over 150 tomatoes so far, and more are ripening. I'd
recommended Carnival--a hybrid determinate--to anyone who gardens in a hot
climate--Zones 8b to 11. It's great. Have 100 strawberry plants in too.
My beds are ringed with concrete cinder blocks which each have two holes. I
filled the holes with good soil and that is where all the strawberry plants
are--one per hole. They love it, because they are high, dry and the
concrete heats up in the sun. The plants are loaded with blooms and
berries. Been picking sugar snaps since Nov. and just planted a second crop
of them. Shelling peas are in, as are beets, three kinds of carrots, 5
kinds of lettuce and mache. Elephant garlic, soft neck garlic and bunching
onions are all doing well. Herbs that love cool weather are doing
great--cilantro, dill and Italian flat-leaf parsley. My potatoes are about
1 foot tall. I planted them in late Nov. I read in the Bountiful Gardens
catalog that gardeners in zones 8b to 11 will have better luck with spuds by
planting them in winter. So I'm trying it this year, because potatoes never
do well for me. It gets hot too fast in the spring here.
Let's hear from other warmer climate gardeners. Maybe we can pass on some
info and inspiration to our northern friends.
