Re: snap peas and pole beans

Kerri et. al.-

I did exactly this last year in my garden and had no problems. Peas should
be put out really early, so mine were finishing up in mid-late June. Beans
really are temperature sensitive and love warm soil, so if you try to plant
them early, before the ground is good and warm, you are wasting your time.
I put some cranberry (bush) beans in before the weather got warm enough,
and they didn't germinate for 4 weeks. Just as I was giving up, they grew
up seemingly overnight and I had a good crop. My pole beans germinated ok,
but stayed small (6-8") for what seemed like forever. Then in August they
shot up and started acting like beans and I had a great crop until hard
frost. Several other folks in my area had the same experience with their
beans, so I think it was more weather-related than the fact that I had peas
in there early in the season.
