I lived in the Dallas area for four years before moving down to the Gulf
Coast, so I have experience with gardening in both areas. And, I found in
both areas that growing potatoes in barrels or anything enclosed including a
stack of old tires is deadly!! To the plants, that is :-)
We get too much heat in Texas for potato vines to flourish in an enclosed
column. Fungal diseases have a perfect breeding ground, and the collected
heat for solar re-radiation stunts growth and sometimes outright kills the
plants. Your best bet for an easy way to do spuds is take a 4 by 4 foot
square of improved soil, lay the seed potatoes on top of the ground (make
sure it has been spaded to loosen it) and cover the potatoes with 12-18
inches of hay, pine straw or shredded leaves.
