Was How to ease water chores in the heat of summer-now = oh my gosh I have an eggplant!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hey you guys! I have an eggplant! I don't know if it will make it but I am
just so pleased to see the plant trying. If I was a seasoned gardener I
would no doubt be disappointed in my small harvest- especially considering
how much it cost me to put in this darn veggie garden. But being the naive ,
enthusiastic and optimistic novice that I am- I am still reeling from
amazement that things that I planted actually grew and gave me food!I am
sure there is an infommercial out there that could take full advantage of my
impressionistic attitude toward veggie gardening right now - if I watched
it- but I am too busy pulling weeds, watering and talking to the babies
growing out there to watch tv. My boyfriend says that I am obsessed and I
say-So be it!! I have been obsessed with flower gardening for a couple of
years now and now I have another avenue to stroll down- fairly inexpensive,
benign and wholesome-I say! My lemon cukes are delicious- planted 4 of
them and they have not disappointed. Roly Poly Zucchini has given about 8
nice ones so far. I know that next year I will plant a lot more of each
individual veggie- you have to allow for failure and to get what you need
of each veggie- I will also increase my beds to 8 and integrate veggies into
the flower garden like Mel suggests. When I look at the pole beans- -I can't
help thinking how lovely they would look growing up the standards on the
carport and I have got to try this scarlet runner bean you all have been
pooping twinkies about. I intend to use Trudi's method of seed planting
over the winter for EVERYTHING- being in Northern CA and having alot of
sheltered area in my carport and porch-I can't see how it would make sense
for me to go thru the seed thing I went thru and then lost so much to
hardening off.
It is funny thing. I found a nasty mud- dabber's nest under a throw rug I
washed several weeks ago( tells you where my priorities are) and hung on a
railing and I didn't know if I should kill em! I had to weigh the pros and
cons! Twas a time when a bug wsas a bug was a bug- but no more! Have not
used any pesticides so far- Just dish soap mixed with mouth wash and water
and onionn and it has been ok. Gave some veggies to my healthnut neighbor
and felt so proud to say that they were organic. It is not that I am against
all herbacides and pesticides( I have used Roundup with the best of them!)
but suddenly I am very much aware of how important the good bugs are and it
makes you willing to accept less than perfect produce and to feel good that
you are getting a balance going on that will hopefully provide a healthy
enviroment for your future gardens.I think that square footing is the only
way to go. I have a dinky yard in a mobile home park and all the old people
were laughing at me when I first planted. Now they are grateful for the
lemon cukes I am growing on a trellis and giving them and are shutting
up!Life is good and this is so much fun!_Teri
