I don't use any borders - I dig paths between the "beds" that are lower than the bed, using that dirt on top of the bed. The paths are then filled with straw/hay so it is clean to walk on, even after rain or watering. It does require a little "maintenance" each year to straighten up the sides of the beds each spring, but they do stay together.
