Hi Tristan,
Marigolds tend to keep beneficial as well as bad insects away. The idea is
to bring as many aphid enemies as possible to your garden. You may want to
control any aphid farming by ants by putting a good sized ring of coffee
grinds around the stems of your peppers and tomatoes in order to keep the
ants away. You then want to attract as many beneficial insects that eat or
are parasites to aphids as possible. (tiny parastic wasps, ladybugs,
lacewings etc.) You do this by planting flowering dill, sweet alyssum, yarrow
and some high pollen plants like sunflowers and cosmos in or around your
vegies. You will also increase your vegie plants productivity by planting
these flowers, as they attract pollenating insects to your garden.
    Good luck.
