How about barn wood. When I was down in SC this spring I saw lots of old barns falling apart. There are bound to be lots of old 4X6 or 6X6 inch beams in those that can be salvaged. Don't use treated wood. If you can find a plastic/wood hybrid product called Trex you might want to build your squares out of that. It should last forever and shouldn't slowly poison you like treated wood.
