Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
1 - I know Mel recommends, in his book, using a glass jar to store seeds
in the refrigerator but I'm wondering if a plastic jar, such as a 48 oz.
rectanglar-shaped jar, would be OK to use. Does anyone know why he
recommends a glass jar? Otherwise, I would think that a plastic jar
would be just as good, wouldn't you?
2 - I'd like to have raised beds, possibly next year, but for now I've
just added and mixed in some of the things Mel suggested to have a
better soil. My question is, whether or not you have a raised bed, does
anyone have a good way to mark off the squares? It was rather
time-consuming to mark off and try to make each of my beds "square." My
husband said some of them looked more like parallelograms (I think
that's what he said), not quite 90 degree angles, of course, if you know
what I mean!! I'd like to make some type of pattern that I can reuse,
so I don't have to measure everything out when I make new squares. I
only have four squares now but would like to possibly double that
amount. If anyone has any suggestions for some type of "pattern" I'd
really appreciate your ideas.
3 - Since I'm new at SFG, what would you suggest as the best thing to
use for my walkways. I'd like to do it as cheaply as possible (AND I
want to stay as close to keeping it organic as possible), in case I
change/move the beds around next year. Does anyone know the pros/cons
of using black plastic in walkways and putting a few rocks, mulch or
something else on it to hold it down? I've read somewhere about using
newspapers under the beds to prevent weed growth, so I'm wondering would
that be OK to use instead of the black plastic with whatever to hold it
down? Eventually I'd like to use patio blocks or something when I
decide I have the beds where I want them but I'll have to check into
whether or not they're safe to use. Thanks in advance!!
Marlene
