to 4 parts water. Higher amounts of sugar can cause liver enlargement &
subsequent liver failure. You can use either white or brown sugar but
not honey as it is much more susceptible to spoilage & contains
botulism toxins. Molds form quickly, which can infect the hummer's
tongues. They then cannot feed & soon perish. Keep feeders clean. Rinse
them thoroughly each time you add a new solution. Use a brush with hot
tap water & a little white vinegar, not soap or detergent. Homemade
nectar formula can be made via stove or microwave. To make a little
under 1 quart:

Mix 6 oz. sugar (3/4 cup) & 6 oz. water. Bring to a boil (this helps
the sugar dissolve completely & retards fermentation. Add 18 oz. water
& bring to a boil again. You can add a few drops of red food coloring
if desired (it helps me to read the level of solution left in the
feeder & hummers love the color red). Refrigerate unused portion. I use
my pyrex quart glass measuring pour container to make the solution in
the microwave & then pour the unused portion in a clean half-gallon
milk jug (bigger than needed but free!).
