Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Kim and all,
We just took some old rusty grided wire--the wire itself about the diameter
of a nice young french bean or half a pencil width--the grid opening size as
previously described. It was about 4ft high and as long as it takes to wrap
into a circle between 2 1/2 ft and 3 ft. in diameter and we just wired it
together. we just planted four or so seeds in the middle of a 3 x3 square
and put the cage around them and thinned to 3 plants when they were up a few
inches and looking like they were going to do ok.
I have other less sturdy(thinner gage wire)ones I use for cukes and such.
the thinner ones I can just smash flat to store( I have a disasterous straw
potato experiment in several of those this year. I got anxious and put too
much straw to high on the interior perimeter of the cages too soon and it
caved in and deprived the plants of light---dead plants ---no potatoes.
Hope that helps. Oh for squash, I like/love those horse fence
trellises--anchored with those uuugily green posts with sharp points and an
extra appendage of some sort, that you get at farm stores. We have WIND here
"from then to almost always" and it does great.
