Tomato Worms

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

This is probably old hat for many of you, but I need your
help. This is the third year I've had these giant, ugly green
"worms" eat up my tomato plants just as they began to ripen.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these things? In years
past I've paid the kids a dime for every one they pull off with
a pair of pliers (too squishy to touch!). Isn't there an easier
way to save my tomatoes?

Oh, BTW, my SQFT beds are out by the barn which is a pretty
buggy area, but even up by the house we were terrorized with
these critters. They're about 3" long and the same shade of
green as our tomato plants, like giant caterpillars with stripes
on the sides. They've devoured most of the foliage at the tops of
each plant and a few green tomatoes.

Thanks in advance,
