One other way that has always worked for me, on all watermelons.  Look at
the point where the stem of the fruit is attached to the vine.  There is a
tendril opposite the stem, and when the melon is ripe, the tendril is dry
and dead.  I picked a couple of melons that way that didn't look ripe by
other methods, but when cut open, they were ripe!
