Vertical Watermelon

Has anyone out there tried watermelon on a vertical support? I have several 
about 5 ft off the ground and about softball size, but I don't know if I 
should try to support them with anything additional. Cantaloupes are alos 
growing tall but no sign of fruit, just blossoms.
