I grew basil last year, some of it in containers. It grows like wildfire in
Houston, in the heat of summer. Just water it! Any fertilizer will do,
relatively balanced or a bit high in nitrogen. It's leaves we want. The
fish emulsion should do the trick. I've heard estimates of about one square
foot per plant, but you should be able to grow each plant in about 2/3 of a
square foot. If you want to make any reasonable amount of the Lord's sixth
or seventh food group (I forget which . . . I stopped counting after
chocolate and saturated fats . . .), pesto, then you will need several
plants. When they go to seed, pinch the tops (doing so will also cause
branching and better, bushier plants. When they insist on going to seed,
harvest the whole affair and start over.
