   If the seed pack says space every 4 inches in a row then under 
sqft protocol you would give them 4 inches in the column also.  For 
a small breed of corn at four inches row/column you could plant 11 
seeds in each row and column for 121 plats in a 3 ft bed.  That is 
what I have this year and they are growing fine being a good foot 
tall already.
   I use a compost tea for all my watering exclusively.  It feeds the 
plants as well as helping to protect them from disease and water 
them.  I see no reason you couldn't add a small quantity of fish 
emulsion to the tea.
