I'm sorry that your experience has been such an unmitigated disaster, 
Lesley.  I hate to see you give up on this, though. Have you considered 
just building a 4x4 box on a patio or some other location with even a 
modicum of sun and focusing on growing what you can there? With cold 
frame/sun boxes you can extend the season for a small space and grow salad 
fixings for quite a long time. It would also be a good experiment ground 
for later when you have more space.
