In a message dated 97-06-06 10:49:09 EDT, you write: << I'm new to the list, but have been using the square-foot method for << three years (ever since I bought my first house with a yard). I << saw an article in Organic Gardening a couple of years ago on using << the square-foot method for planting corn, and I was wondering if << someone could tell what the optimum spacing is. Also, any << recommendations on fertilizer? I understand corn is a heavy feeder. I planted Sugar Dot Bicolor corn last year at one per square foot, yield was an average of one ear per stalk (some had two, others none fully developed). I also planted a Blue lake pole bean between the corn stalks, they were very prolific. This year I planted some of the Sugar dot and some Early Sunglow, I planted the Early sunglow at about 8 inch spacing because it's a small variety. I also did the bean thing again because it looked neat last year and seems to work despite the crowding. I just use a lot of homemade compost in my soil and sporadic feedings of bat guano and seaweed tea as fertilizer, my sugar dot is two foot high and seems happy. Tom, Zone 8b (Portland OR)
