Get a copy of Organic Gardening-- your local library probably has it. They have a seed exchange page. Many people will send you extra seeds for the cost of a S.A.S.E. Ask the library where your local Cooperative Extension is-- they can give you lots of advice for gardening in your area. They may also be able to tell you where in your area you can get FREE soil enhancers or mulch--in my area (Northern Va.) many governments offer free mulch. The library should also have good gardening books--DON'T buy one until you find it's indispensible (even Mel's!) One tip, courtesy of The Tightwad Gazette (she's a kook, but once in a while she makes sense): unless it's a veggie you CRAVE, it may make sense NOT to grow it if you can find it in the grocery store. One of my own: if you use herbs in cooking, grow them! They don't take up much space and if you've ever checked the per pound price in the store, you can see it really pays to grow them. I dry dill, oregano and thyme in my microwave and grow enough each summer for a year's use! Good luck--and have fun!
