Hi Richard, > When I was preparing the soil in my squares I never added any wood ash, > as Mel recommends in his book, because I didn't have any available. Does anyone know if I can use it as a top > dressing around my plants or should it be dug into the dirt? Is it too > late into the season to use it? > Thanks, > Richard(zone6) > Brooklyn, NY Yes, you can top dress with it, it's not too late at all. You can either leave it on the surface or work it in to the top inch or so with your fingers or a small hand tool. The nutients in wood ashes are very soluble and will work their way into the soil. The ash itself is very small particles and will also wash down into the soil somewhat.
