Bill,
I used crimson clover as a living mulch under some tomato plants and all my
melons this year. It worked great, especially with the melons. There are
no fungal diseases on the leaves--a real problem in my hot, humid climate.
I'm about to turn under the clover, having pulled up the tomato plants.
There is a healthy stand. From an agriculture manual, I learned that
crimsom clover contributes 80 lbs. of nitrogen per acre. Of, course our SQ
FT gardens are tiny, but the clover does add enough to help. Most plants
need less nitrogen than they are fed. What I like about the clover is that
it prevents fungal spores from splashing up on plant leaves and adds humus
to the soil.
