Chapter next in the saga of DTs heroic migration to the wilds of (north) Tacoma, WA. I have created and planted (mostly with transplants) three 4ft sq raised beds, with plans for maybe one more this year for late veggies and a total of seven for '98. I am also planning 2 Asparagus beds: 40"W X 12'-8" long (ID) X 2' high built from 8 x 8 x 16 cement blocks, the holes to be filled with soil for growing herbs & alliums. I am also planning to install several 12 to 18 inch "bell & spigot" concrete pipe sections, vertically, about half buried, for those invasive plants like the mints, comfrey and horseradish. To get to my question, with all this "stuff" in a 37.5' X +/- 60' (SOUTH FACING) back yard it seems a bit silly to try to put in any lawn. I am examining the idea of laying down wood chips over cardboard or black Visqueen or whatever..... The chips would be free from the "tree grinders" and most likely Alder, Vine Maple, Cedar, or other evergreen growth indigenous to the Mid Puget Sound area. Does anyone out there have any reliable info on possible side effects occurring from the decomposition of said chips? I am not aware of any problems and, as I have been buried in the hassles of getting moved, there has not been time for the appropriate research. Any thoughts?????????????
