As stated previously to this group, I don't like using pesticides. I don't
believe they are good for wildlife or people. My humble opinion.
I used the TX horned lizard as an EXAMPLE of ONE species that has been
threatened by loss of habitat, which includes of course, food supply, 90%
of which is harvester ants. My point is simply, the use of pesticides may
have further reaching effects than we realize, and to consider the benefits
against possible harms.
According to a pamphlet made available by the Oklahoma Department of
Wildife, Wildlife Diversity Program entitled "Oklahoma's Most Wanted: The
Texas Horned Lizard"
"Increased use of pesticides may have reduced the harvester ant population
in some areas, thus reducing the horned lizard's main food supply....also,
herbicides used to eliminate weeds may effect harvester ant populations by
reducing the abudance or quality of seeds on which the ants feed."
Obviously, there are other factors involved.
