RE: When To Mulch

Mulching around established plants and transplants makes sense to me, but
I'd appreciate any ideas on how to use it with seedlings.

Thanks in advance!

I wondered about this same thing this spring when I planted. I read
somewhere that it is actually better to wait and mulch only after the
sprouts are up. Mulch retains moisture, but it also deflects the sun's
warming effect on soil. To get fast, complete seed germination, heat is
a big factor. This worked well for me. I mulched with about 3 inches of
straw just after things sprouted up an inch or so. You just have to make
sure to keep the tender little guys well watered until they are ready to
mulch around.
Good Luck.
