There were advertisements in the National Gardening magazine a year or so
ago for something similar using a fiberglass channel. Planters could be
made to any length.

Large amounts of elemental copper inhibit root growth! Planting holes are
lined with copper mesh to prevent tree roots from penetrating underground
water and sewage lines!

Fancy copper planters should be used as urns, not for growing - place a
plastic tray in the bottom of the container, and keep the plant(s) in a
plastic pot. This also allows you to switch plants easily for a seasonal
display.

In general, this is a good way to handle window boxes and other planters.
Keep the individual plants in plastic pots, and fill the rest of the box
with light-weight vermiculite. Add a layer of bark chips to unify the look
and preserve moisture. Because window boxes are often focal points, it is
very useful to be able to pull an ailing plant without affecting its
neighbors. The plastic plants also help preserve moisture and minimize
weight - both common concerns with window boxes. For more details see
