Sudden Move to Zone 5

Hi SQ Footers,
I find myself suddenly moving out of my Zone 9b
Gulf Coast Texas garden to Springfield, IL in about
45 days. Beyond the shock of my husband's sudden
job change and the subsequent rapid sale of our house,
(it was the Sq. Ft. garden that clinched the deal!), I'm
overwhelmed by the gardening challenges that lie
ahead. I think Springfield, IL, which is about 100 miles
northeast of St. Louis and 185 miles southwest of
Chicago, is in Zone 5. I've never gardened in a zone
any colder than Zone 7 in Southern Oklahoma. It
was a gardening paradise. I need advice. I move
(husband has already left) on or about July 17. I'm
sure that date is too late for me to plant a veggie
garden in Springfield. Any suggestions on how to
overwinter some of the tropical plants I want to
bring with me in containers--things like dwarf
bananas, hibiscus and brugsmansia? Any help or
advice is appreciated. And, if any of you live in the
area, please tell me about the local garden centers
and gardening resources. Finally, if any of you are
in or near the Houston, TX area, I am selling many
rare tropical plants like incense passiflora, clerodendron
trichotoum and some potted citrus, including cold-hardy
cultivars.
