4th of July Tomatoes Are Ripe!/Strawberry Help!

Friends,
It has been a while since I last posted to this list, due to a number of
distractions such as 80 mph straight line winds on May 30th which did a number
on my garden (and on my roof!). Amazingly, almost all of my plants recovered
including the snap pea vines which were laying flat on the ground and which I
cable tied back to the trellis, which was still stamding.

On another topic, a while back there was some debate as to the general
worthiness of Burpee's 4th of July tomatoes. Well, I set my tomatoes out in
the garden a few days before May 1 and I just harvested my first ripe tomato
today (6/29/98). The tomato has lived up to its name for me at least! I have a
huge crop of tomatoes which will be ripened by July 4th. My impression of the
taste: EXCELLENT. They were extremely tasty, not at all like your typical
early tomato, and they were extremely sweet, almost like a cherry tomato. Size
is as advertized, small 3-4 oz fruits perfect for salads, IMHO.

FYI, I also have an excellent crop of Supersteak tomatoes which are over 1 lb
each and still growing, so I am pleased with their progress as well.

ADVICE NEEDED: I am growing TriStar strawberries and have been very
disappointed by the yield & sweetness. So far I have harvested about 2 small,
sour strawberries. The ones which I left on the plants longer to ripen more
have been devoured by ants when I'm not looking. ANY ADVICE???

Thanks for the attention,
Joel
