Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi, Susan-
> I have found my love in gardening. This is my first season and thanks to
Mel's methods I was able to obtain great interest in herbs and vegetables.
I'm an old gardener, but new to square footing. My wife is new to both, but
she is really getting into it.
>I live in Raleigh, NC- zone 7-b. In other words it gets HOT!, in the
summer months... Ideally I would like to collect rainwater and run a hose
from it, any suggestions on building such a system would be greatly
appreciated.
I live near you, and just installed a rainwater system. With 42" of average
rainfall a year (we're behind for this year) you have plenty to work with.
The key fact is that your roof and your garden are both collecting rain. If
they are the same size (area), you have doubled the rain available to the
garden, provided you catch it all. Just figure out how water much you use a
week and how many weeks you want it to last without new rainfall, and you
can calculate how big your rain barrel should be.
We went down to AgriSupply in Garner and bought a couple of 1000 gal. farm
water tanks. Our detached garage is now a water barn, and its gutters run
into the tanks inside. I figure we can use 100 gallons a week with a three
month reserve against drought.
> Drip irrigation seems like a great concept but I do not feel like digging
up the ground and wrestling with little threaded parts and hoses at this
time.
Amen! The nursery where we got our fruit trees suggested that a leaky
bucket that drips slowly is a good alternative to running pipe and soaker
hoses everywhere. Just fill the bucket with a regular hose, and walk away.
We're trying it.
