Re: Strawberries

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Wow - a question I can sort of answer: strawberries are about the only thing
doing well in my garden right now! I mixed about 1/2 or so planting mix with
my indigeneous soil wich was kind of clay ridden. They seem to be doing
well, and I planted a variety called "Tri-star" which is supposed to be
great in my area (near Seattle).

In early Spring I pulled out a bunch of them that I planted last year
because they looked practically dead, and planted new ones in their place.
Well, the ones that I left in are about 5 times bigger than the new plants!
So there's my advice: next spring, leave them in and give 'em a chance!

They tend to spread - wherever they bend down and reach the ground there is
a possibility they will make a new plant there. I'm not sure what to do
about that - pull them out, let them spread and fill in, etc.

I did give my plants about 12 - 18 inches, that seems about right. They get
pretty big the 2nd year (mine are about 10" tall now).

- Matt
