I'm in zone 4A (Minnesota), which is the colder part of that zone. Based
on the zone maps, I'm about an hours drive from the border of zone 3.
The growing season is not overly long, but the number of daylight hours
and the excellent soil make up for it. In other words, skip the
artichokes, and stick with lettuce, peppers and tomatoes! Raspberries
also do well. Last summer, we had to eat 2 pies a week just to keep up
with them ( it was a tough job, but someone had to do it).
Speaking of peppers, an excellent book is "The Pepper Garden" by Dave
DeWitt and Paul Bosland. In it is a section on growing peppers in cool
climates and a list of peppers that do well under those conditions.

Good luck with your garden.
