Bugs on my cucumber/zucchini plants

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Good am all! Well, first sq ft garden is so far doing great (much better
than any other attempt I've ever made at gardening!!! :-)

Last night, while watering, I noticed many of these black/orange bugs on
the leaves and stalks of my cucumber plants. There were a couple on the
zucchini also, but not near as numerous. The bug's body looks like a fat
little, short worm, but he also has about 6 legs. The body is a dull black
with 6 little orange marks on the sides of it (3 marks on each side). I
picked all that I could find off and squished them. I didn't see any of
these things a couple of nights ago when I checked. So far it doesn't seem
like they've done any damage whatsoever to the plants but I can't find any
ref to them in my garden books. What are they and are they helpful or
harmful? (If they're helpful, I don't want to keep murdering them!)

And now for my second question. Another cuke plant (straight edge) has
about 4 leaves that are all curled and crinkled up. Underside of the leaf
is covered with little white things. Should I pull off and destroy these
leaves?

TIA
Kristine
