We didn't grow our own, so I don't know when to

Recipes *are* off-topic. It would be much better (certainly proper
netiquette) to simply avail yourself of the many recipe forums [1] and
websites [2] that specialize in cooking, instead of growing.
[1]] The rec.food* newsgroups are full of recipes and people who want to
talk recipes, and their archives (via dejanews.com) are full of recipes
that have been posted in the past. Try:
http://x42.deja.com/=dnc/qs.xp?ST=PS&QRY=rhubarb&groups=rec.food*&OP=dnquery
.xp&showsort=date&maxhits=100&format=terse&uniq=928995086.1171914755
which gives you the most recent 100 posts to the rec.food* newsgroups that
have "rhubarb" in them.
[2] For websites that have recipes, try:
http://hotbot.com/?MT=rhubarb+recipe&SM=MC&DV=0&LG=any&DC=100&clickSrc=search
This should get you going. :-)
