Weeds, Weeds, Weeds

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I confess to being a complete novice so please bear with my dumb question.

I planted some stuff and it is doing nicely. Then just a couple days ago
many, many, hundreds of tiny weeds raised their ugly heads. They are flat
little things and have four or five leaves each. I used my trowel and dug
them up and sort of smoothed the dirt back over. Will they reroot or do I
have to pick each and everyone out? This would be a bit difficult as they
are so tiny.

To keep them from returning, I gather it would be wise to use some kind of
ground cover? I really don't want to use plastic sheeting as my little
garden is in
front of my house and this would be pretty ugly. How about wood chips?
Will they keep weeds down? Anything else?

Thank you for your patience.
