Jim,

My mother used to do the same thing... she said that if the sun hit the
leaves while they were frost covered, that they would burn, and kill the
plants.... Don't know if that's truly why it worked, or not, but it worked
for her in Southeast Michigan for years...  (can't tell you how many times
we were out washing frost off the leaves at 5 a.m. (sun comes up pretty
early in Michigan!))  I haven't gardened enough in Northwest Michigan to
try it yet, but hope to have an opportunity to find out in the future!
