Re: off List: Chiggers

Jennifer:
Have gone to the doctor? That sounds serious. They may be spider bites or worse. I know chiggers are related to spiders, but your bites don't really sound like chigger bites. Use Campho-Phenique or a great product called Chigger-X to put on the bites after they occur. They will kill chiggers that have worked their way into your skin.

I can tell you some ways to help keep insects off of you while you are in the garden.

I use REPEL insect repellant...check and see if it has any ingredients you might be allergic to. If you don't want to spray it on your hair...(which I do...I lean over and spray it on the nape of my neck and into the flowing hair) THEN wear a wide brimmed tightly woven straw or cotton hat and spray the hat with repellent...both inside and out.

You can also use Avon Skin-So-Soft as a safer repellent to use on your face, shoulders, and hands.

If the critters are falling out of the trees, trim the lower branches.

Hope this helps,
Sheryl

PS: Sevin works, and it is one of the safer chemicals to use in and around the garden...ask someone for information...and read the labels before you decide to buy!
