Perhaps, but they can make it very hard on a writer who wants to keep
control of his creations. There aren't a lot of writers who will stand up
and refuse rights to a big name publisher because they are afraid of hurting
their chances to sell anything at all. Too bad, because if enough DID stand
up, the publishers would have no choice - change terms or not be able to get
material. In the case of Rodale, they have gone almost entirely to
"in-house" writing, by their regular staff. Personally, I think that's one
way to make a magazine stale in a hurry - no input of fresh ideas from
outside.
