new to list-new garden

I just started on the list and want to say it's nice to see it is positive
and not negative like some of the others I've been on.  

This is the first year We'll be able to have a real garden.  In the past
I've been stuck with three pots and 1 planter, so I am very excited for
this spring.  I'm permanently located on 1.3 acres.  Unfortunately it is
totally empty sandy soil with a TON of rocks in it.  I love the squarfoot
method (I've read through the book every spring for the last eight years
and dreamed about more than those pots) now I will get to actually put it
into practice.  We will be doing raised beds 12" deep 4'x10' long and
filling them with compost.  What wood works best?  Is the compost a good
Idea?  We are very eager to get started here in our E. Idaho zone 4 garden
and want any advice we can get.  We've got a blank slate and don't want to
make a lot of expensive mistakes.  Any commments will be greatly appreciated.
