My mom uaually put 6" - 12" pieces of red yarn from Christmas packages on a
bush or the discarded Xmas tree.  Birds took it, and built nests.

Then the red yarn was easier to spot. SHE, was a bird watcher!
Of some use, some birds eat insects...
i.e.: Oklahoma Scissor Tailed Fly Catcher.
Fun to watch acrobatics of these.
