OT: fleas/ticks vs. worms/grubs (was lawn guy,land & smashing the image)

I am fairly new to this list and just have one quick question.  What 
techniques do you suggest for keeping bugs like fleas and ticks off of my dog 
and cat.  Both spend some time out in the fenced portion of my yard.  I have 
many trees and my land is adjacent to a creek as well as about 20 acres 
undeveloped land.

I would love to do as mentioned in Steven Davidoff's post, and let the bugs 
go, but what can I use outside that won't kill some beneficials, along with 
the fleas and ticks?
