Ruth, one thing that strikes all first-time summer squash growers is that 
the fruit, once set, grows very quickly. "I had no idea it would get so big 
so fast!"  I'm reading between your lines...are you expecting these squash 
to come from vining plants?  Summer squash are produced on bush-type 
plants, plants that sort of creep.  Zucchini, for instance, is produced on 
a stem, and to produce more, the stem has to grow longer.  I don['t know 
how the eight-ball zucchini grows, but if it says it's a bush squash, fine. 
If it doesn't, it will be quite a large plant.  Margaret L
