Patricia, I use a combination of grass clippings from our yard (we catch all the clippings in a bag), thick layers of newspaper (it degrades eventually, but helps keep the weeds and Bermuda grass at bay), and shredded wood bark. The wood bark is not used in my raised garden beds, but I do use it in my perennial and ornamental beds, as well as around my semi-dwarf fruit trees. The newspaper/clippings mixture seems to work well for me anywhere, including my garden walkways, and has helped to reduce the mud factor when it rains, as well as keeping the weeds and grass under some control (although with Bermuda, it's an ongoing battle). Eventually I plan to use the fallen leaves from our neighborhood, but our trees are not big enough yet (it's a new subdivision) to do that.
