Baby Corn

Hi everyone

I'm a new subscriber and I would appreciate some help regarding growing
baby sweetcorn. I live in the southern part of the UK and have grown
corn before, but our climate isn't particularly well suited to it. In a
bad summer it is difficult to get it fully ripened before we start to
run out of sun. The family love it and I'm hoping that baby corn will
be more reliable.

Firstly, should I plant a normal variety (l'll pick and F1 early
variety) or a variety which is claimed to be specifically for baby corn.
Secondly, what's the 'best' spacing. I've seen this suggested in UK
publications ranging from conventional distances (I usually go about 18"
each way) all the way down to as close as 6" each way. For information
I grow on 4' wide 'deep beds' and have quite heavy soil, but double dug
and with plenty of spent mushroom compost dug in. Any other tips for
growing corn in marginal climates gratefully received.

Regards

Chris Lawrence
