I would make the bottoms of the boxes at least as high as the tallest
dog's hips. The top should be at least a foot over that. That gives you
at least a foot of dirt. I hope I understand you right that you plan to
make a free standing box on legs of some sort. And not a walled bed that
goes down to the ground.
