Jim,
Your grandmother taught you to seek advice; mine taught me to ripen green
tomatoes by hanging the uprooted vines upside down in a protected place at
the end of the season! She did this for years with very good results.
Personally, I prefer picking the tomatoes and laying them in a single layer
in a cardboard box covered with newspaper as I do not want to bring all that
dirt into my basement.
