I planted corn in a 1 per square system in a 4 x 8' raised planter bed.
They did well, though I did have a major aphid problem (like I have every
year I've tried corn). The stalks only formed 1 ear per plant though, and
the plants in the center of the box especially had small ears. The way I
pollinated it was to shake gently to move the pollen around. I didn't do
it in the wee hours of the morning, as I'm not a morning person either. Is
4 per square really what they're recommending now? It seems awfully close
together to me for the plants in the center to develop well.
Cantaloupe definitely need warmer temps to germinate well. Try putting
them on top of your fridge or somewhere warmer.
Celery is kind of hard to grow in So. Cal for me. It needs rather sandy
soil. I have definitely clayey soil, though it's getting better over the
years with amendments. Let us know how it turns out if you try it.
