Tomatoes
Hiya everyone,
I was chatting with my postman last week about seeds (a friend sent me
some I was looking for and I had to get the parcel from the postman)
and he mentioned that he wouldn't have time for a garden this year, so
he'd see what seeds he could dig up and give me some.
We went down to check the mail today and found a dozen packets of
seeds in the mailbox - including 3 varieties of tomatoes I didn't
have.
My question is: Any input on the varieties of tomatoes I should grow
this year?
I'm in western NC, 3500 ft elevation, south side of the mountain,
generally a more constant temperature than the surrounding areas.
The only thing I've ever managed to grow much at all before (in FL)
has been tomatoes).
I'm not sure how many plants I should grow. My husband cannot eat
tomatoes, so it's only me, but I love them in sauces and raw.
Wonderful to knibble on fresh from the garden. My postman will be
happy to receive some also, and I already have a bid in from a friend
to take my extra transplants, especially the cherry tomatoes.
The varieties I have are:
Heatwave hybrid (already have 2 plants growing)
Tiny Tim (already have 7 plants growing)
Trip-L-Crop (3 plants growing)
Rutgers (7 plants growing)
Beefsteak
Amana Orange
Homestead
Red Cherry, Large Fruited
So, given my own consumption and giving some away or selling some to
the local market, how many plants total should I grow? Anyone?
Dara - still looking forward to spring. Went to bed the other night
with 1/2 of snow on the ground. The local folks say to plant anything
that's frost tender on or after May 10th.
