Re: Mulch

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Kim,

In Quebec we have studied the use of chipped branches (3" diameter and less)
and found that they do fine in field and garden.

If you get summertime materials with leaves included, the C/N ratio is good
for composting and mulching.

Moira Ryan, a retired New Zealand horticulturalist who contributes to the
Compost list and the Organic Gardening list, has reported her chipped
materials are entirely consumed in her soil in a matter of months.

She chips her own, as do I, which does yield a smaller chip. The only thing
to avoid is a big pile of chips where some part of the pile may have soured
due to anaerobic decomposition; this could cause trouble.

So go for fresh materials with lots of leafy stuff in them, and you'll do
fine, I expect.

Good Gardening,

Frank Teuton
