Grape vines

I would like to plant grape vines. My ground has huge boulders and is
very
hard to dig to plant anything. I have morterless block each measuring 16

8 X 6. Can I make a "square" for each vine above ground? How big does my
"square" need to be for each vine? Can the square be only one block high
(8
inches)? What soil is best to fill it with? Thank you for any help you
can
give.

My reply:

Well I am no grape expert, but I have sen them growing all around the
country and I'll say this, they are tenacious plants. I think if you
just drove a hole in the ground a hardy grapevine would find a way to
thrive, Really, I have seen some growing in such a state of neglect that
it would amaze you. I am helping out with a late 1800 orchard
restoration and the darn grape vines are still alive at this time. I do
not know when they were planted yet, but certainly before 1920. Anyway
the point is their protegy have naturalized all over the limestone rock
faces...worming their way into nooks and crannies...

My advice do the best you can plant them and lay down a thick mulch...

Also the Ssquare Foot Gardening list is lucky to have Lon Rombough on
board, perhaps he will join the thread and offer an opinion.
